Mongolia – Experiments with Felt

Experiments with felt, Pictura 2011

Mongolia is a land of stunning beauty, rich with culture and tradition. For many people, it’s an inspiring place to visit and to explore. It also was exciting for me when I first traveled to Mongolia. I have been inspired to create a series of works that explore themes such as tradition, protection, and the basic needs of existence.

Using felt as a medium was an important choice; felt evokes feelings of warmth and safety while also referencing the idea cronyism (the German meaning of the word felt) — a system where those who are close or connected benefit from special privileges or advantages over others in society. The motifs used throughout these tapestries were inspired by sketches made during the period in Mongolia.
