Recent visits to Switzerland in 2019 and 2020 opened my eyes to the cultural world of cultivation, food production and rural life. It made me wonder what this connection between urban and rural culture means now?
On one hand there is an immense industrialization of agricultural production that has been enabled by technology such as computers and automation. This was evident when I visited an orchid grower near Monster where most processes were computerized, and the company invests into circular systems for sustainability.
On the other hand, there are small farms like those I encountered during my visit in Switzerland, which give me a glimpse into how much hard work goes into producing food.
